What is Yellow Fever?

Yellow Fever is a disease caused by a virus which is spread via mosquito bites. The symptoms of Yellow Fever usually develop within 3-6 days of being infected and include:

  • High temperature

  • Headache

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Muscle pain and backache

  • Light sensitivity

  • Loss of appetite

  • Feeling generally unwell

Up to 25% of people infected with Yellow Fever go on to develop serious symptoms such as:

  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (Jaundice)

  • Bleeding from the mouth, ears, eyes or nose

  • Blood in stool or vomiting blood

There is no cure for Yellow Fever but the symptoms can be treated as your body fights off the infection. Most people make a full recovery within four days, however, up to 50% of those who develop the more serious symptoms will die.

How can Yellow Fever be prevented?

The vaccine for Yellow Fever is extremely effective and can stop you from contracting Yellow Fever whilst abroad. The vaccine is given as an injection and should be administered at least 10 days before travel. If you choose to have your Yellow Fever vaccination at Reid's Pharmacy, you will receiver an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) which is required for entry into certain countries. This certificate is included in the price of your vaccination.

Although the vaccine is very effective, it is also important to reduce your risk of exposure by lowering your risk of mosquito bites. Please ensure you use insect repellents, sleep under mosquito nets and wear long sleeves and trousers when possible.
